Todd rappaport, Senior Director of Marketing and CommunicationsThe 77th Tony Awards® are coming, and this year, shows in Shubert theatres racked up a whopping 82 nominations in total! We’re not sure if that’s a record, but it sure feels like a lot. It’s really no surprise, considering we had 20 of the season’s 36 eligible new shows, but the nominations are a testament to the incredibly high quality of the productions in our theatres.
In fact, four of the five Best Musical nominees are in Shubert houses: Hell’s Kitchen, The Outsiders, Suffs, and Water for Elephants—with a combined 38 nominations. Here Lies Love, Lempicka, The Notebook, Back to the Future, The Great Gatsby, and Gutenberg also received a bunch of nominations. And although there were fewer plays in our theatres than usual, they still account for 30 of those 82 nods, with Stereophonic leading the way with 13—the most nominations for any play ever. Appropriate, Purlie Victorious, Patriots, and Grey House also got nominations in various categories, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a few Tony wins from that list of stellar plays. So, what does this mean for Shubert? Besides all of us being able to pat ourselves on the back, it means that our shows can use the accolades to springboard marketing campaigns and sell some tickets. Increased interest in Tony-nominated shows is often what propels us at this time of year. Think of nominations day as our Black Friday, and the weeks leading up to the ceremony as our holiday season. Shubert is certainly taking advantage of this, with increased marketing across email, social, and digital platforms. The 77th Tony Awards will be held on Sunday, June 16, so be sure to tune in and root for Shubert. For more info, visit https://www.tonyawards.com/. |
