The renovation and re-tooling of the Majestic Theatre, post-Phantom, are nearing completion. The auditorium is being restored to its original grandeur, thanks again to the planning and execution by Francesca Russo Architects and by Shubert’s painters and decorators, directed by Joe Pastor. The building’s fit out includes new heating and cooling systems, new electric service, and new patron restrooms. The stage and trap areas have been completely reconstructed, and fully renovated dressing rooms include upgrades to restrooms and additional showers. A new marquee is under construction with new video signs. New interior finishes include carpeting, drapery, and seating with additional wheelchair-viewing locations.
As some may recall, preparations at the Majestic Theatre for the advent of Phantom occurred back in the late-'80s. Shubert’s Facilities Department supervised major structural modifications backstage to fit Phantom into the stagehouse, including the removal of bedrock below the stage deck. Many years later similar efforts seem almost commonplace at Shubert’s many theatres for incoming large-scale musical productions. During the 35 years that Phantom resided at the Majestic, the Facilities Department moved on to manage full restoration and renovation projects at 13 of Shubert’s 17 Broadway theatres, as well as the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia. ![]() Picture it, January 24, 1984, Apple computers just started selling the first Macintosh. The number one song on the radio in the US is “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” by Yes. While across the pond they are jamming to “Relax” by Frankie Goes To Hollywood”. It was a slightly overcast day, but that couldn't dim Rey White's excitement as he started his first day at The Shubert Organization. To commemorate this ruby anniversary, Telecharge threw a surprise party. Rey was extremely flattered and surprised by the celebration and cited working with such great people as the reason he has been with Telecharge for 40 years. Here's to 40 more years Rey!! Author: CASSANDRA JAMES, DEI MANAGERPop Quiz: Gender Identity, gender expression and sexual orientation are THREE distinct and different identity categories. TRUE OR FALSEGender identity is the personal sense of one's own gender. Gender identity can correlate with a person's assigned sex or can differ from it.
Gender expression, or gender presentation, is a person's behavior, mannerisms, interests, and appearance that are socially associated with gender, namely femininity or masculinity. Sexual orientation is an enduring pattern of whether a person has romantic attraction or sexual attraction to persons of the opposite sex or gender, the same sex or gender, or to both sexes or more than one gender. Based on these definitions the choice is TRUE, but people sometimes conflate the three. In high school my gender expression was more masculine, as evidenced by the cringeworthy pictures below. What can I say, I grew up in NY in the 90s. Because of that, people made all sorts of assumptions about my gender identity and sexual orientation. They would erroneously think I wanted to be a boy, or that I was a lesbian. In their minds since I dressed like this, all the other things must follow as well. Think about your own life. If you’re wearing a dress one day and pants another, does that influence your sexual orientation and who you are attracted to? Does your gender identity depend on what you are wearing? I know it can seem overwhelming to learn the different terms and identities, but just think about your own life. Look at how it relates to you, and that may help break it down for you. If not, you can always reach out to me, your friendly neighborhood DEI manager. |
