Equity is NOT Equality

12/5/2022

When discussing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion the word equality is sometimes confused with equity, but they are not interchangeable.

Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome. It can be tempting to say, “let's just treat everyone equally and things will be fine”. In theory that sounds good, but if you have low vision just having a computer as your colleague doesn’t help you do your job to the same level. Having a screen reader might enable you to perform to the best of your abilities. Everyone has access to the theatre, but accommodations must be made so everyone has equal access in this shared experience, whether that is accessible seating, hearing devices or affordable tickets.

Here’s a short video that breaks it down even further, along with a LinkedIn article with more examples.

Email Etiquette

12/5/2022

How many hours a week does the average worker spend on email?
  1. 10 hours/ week
  2. 15.5 hours/week
  3. 20 hours/week

How many times per hour does the average worker check their email?
  1. Once an hour
  2. Five times an hour
  3. Eleven times an hour

No matter how many hours you spend on email, according to Indeed.com, there are certain rules that we should abide by to reflect email etiquette. What are those rules you ask?

  1. Include a clear subject line
Show your recipient clearly what the email will cover. Many people will decide whether they will open an email depending on the subject line.
  2. Be cautious with “Reply All”
The benefit of using “Reply all” is that you can respond to everyone at once to let them know an issue has been addressed. However, when in doubt, use “Reply” to avoid inundating a list of people with unnecessary emails.
More info on using Reply All
  3. Use a professional greeting
Choose a salutation that is appropriate for the relationship you have with the recipient.
